Think about the Caldecott Honor winner The Spider and the Fly as illustrated in a 1920s movie house style by Tony DiTerlizzi. Meet one of the few.Ītmospheric black and white, when done right, yields picture book gold. Only a few books think to take advantage of that fact. Kids are naturally afraid that there might be monsters under their beds, so they understand paranoia. The result is a picture of psychosis running rampant. There are hints of Hitchcock, Wells, Twilight Zone, and other influences ( Vertigo being the most direct reference of them all). The decision was the right one and Brown cleverly culled from not a single noir source but from many. It's interesting that though Reynolds has specialized in child lit noir for years (his Joey Fly Private Eye comic books practically typify the genre) there's nothing ostensibly noir-ish about the text for Creepy Carrots! Just the same, Peter Brown saw something atmospheric there to be plundered. Particularly when they don't see where the story is going. I love a picture book with a good twist, and so do child audiences. The book's finale is one of those twist endings that some kids will get while others just enjoy the visuals. Reading this book you hit that dichotomy of potentially frightening and potentially funny over and over until, at last, you reach the end. It speaks of unnatural slowness, always creepy to kids who move at lightning speeds themselves. It reminded me of the sound of the dead son in that old short story The Monkey's Paw. The inherent ridiculousness of creeping carrots being scary is paired with the rather effective "tunktunktunk" sound. but there was nothing there." This passage is just begging to be read aloud with Vincent Price-esque cadences. There's a great inherent drama to lines like, "Jasper was about to help himself to a victory snack. What I discovered when I went through it on a word alone basis was that Reynolds has penned a really good readaloud. As difficult as it may be, I tried reading this book without paying attention to the accompanying illustrations (no small feat) to get a sense of what author Aaron Reynolds is doing here. the carrot zone.īefore we get into anything else, let's talk text. Seems that Jasper is being stalked by vegetation. Every day he plucks them from the Crackenhopper Field. Strange and wonderful and weird in all the right places. ![]() With pitch perfect illustration by the increasingly talented Peter Brown, this beautifully shaded creation is a great example of how to get the tone of a picture book exactly right. Had Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds been available when I met that kid, it would have been the first thing I'd have pulled from the shelf. The trick is to find something that manages to balance the funny and the frightening in equal measures, never overplaying its hand. What if I'd handed him Alan Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark)? Would it have scarred him for life? Fortunately the shelves of your average children's room abound with titles that are "scary" enough for a small fry. After a while I'd begin to wonder what would happen if I actually gave him what he said he wanted. For a while there I had this very persistent three-year-old who would beg me for scary fare and wait as I dutifully pulled picture book after picture book for him. You have to know what that pint-sized patron standing before you REALLY wants when they say they want "a scary book". It isn't enough to have to know the books in your collection. That itself would make it a very handy quick-access app, but it does much more than that. You can even quickly switch between open windows within each app, with previews showing on the Touch Bar. It does this by adding your Dock and all its icons to the Touch Bar, complete with notification alerts so you never miss updates to your apps. Which categories are related to hosting games and to "possibility to play with NAT users without lags"? Is it show correct information? Should we beleive to the information, received by "/netinfo"?Īlso, "/netinfo" shows next information: Server TCP, Client TCP, Client UDP and Game UDP. Is it true?Īlso, there is "/netinfo" command in battlenet, which shows you your current opened ports. Someone told me, that Starcraft (by default) use random port for hosting games on battlenet, and this port is not from 6112-6119 range, so if you have NAT and want to host games on battlenet - it is not enough for you to forward ports 6112-6119 for this (also it is not enough for you to forward ports 6112-6119 for "not receiving lags in game, if second NAT user will be in game"). The question is next: are Scenario1 and Scenario 2 - possible?ģ) Same as 1 and 2, but about "receiving lags in game, if second NAT user will be in game" instead of "hosting games". Scenario 2: my Starcraft application used random port for hosting games (for example 1234 or 77888)īoth Scenario 1 and Scenario 2 means, that I did nothing in system registry (I didnt changed ports), so we are talking about default Starcraft behavior Someone want to join to me, and received "latency message", because my Starcraft application used ports 51xxx for hosting games if you are playing solo, then you'll just have to trial and error to find the best east server to connect to, and force the application to connect to that server all the time.1) Are ports 51xxx related to hosting games?Ģ) Scenario 1: I have a NAT (no one can join to my games), and I forwarded only ports 611x. if i recall correctly, there's like ~20 different IP's to choose from for east alone. the best thing to do is to find the server list in your registry (i don't have sc installed anymore so i don't know where it is exactly, so google it) and have you and your friends connect to the same bnet east server. the easiest thing you can do is to keep having other people host, or try hosting yourself, untill you get lucky. i've no idea why, but i've noticed that alot over the years. depending on the b.net east server you connect to, sometimes one east server just doesn't seem to be compatible with other east servers. as long as you can log on to bnet, your ports and everything are fine. i can tell you that if the host starts the game, at the end of the countdown and there's a bit of a pause before the screen changes to the map, and once the map starts and everybody lags like crazy - it has nothing to do with anybody's port or internet speed. Bnet servers have been pretty ******** every since they gone with their AT&T provider. ![]() |
